write + restore inspires to facilitate a new type of community wellness space that is rooted in the tradition of storytelling as a tool for collective well-being. Cultures from around the globe have connected through visual, oral, and written storytelling for thousands of years. We have many shared and unique ways of representing and interpreting stories. These stories are intrinsically intertwined with our individual and collective identities. Stories from religious doctrines to pop music to gossip from the nail salon; stories shape our meaning of the world.
Storytelling is how humans have connected for thousands of years. It is this innate ability that separates humans from other animal species. When we analyze stories and discuss themes we deepen our critical thinking skills and strengthen our sense of self and community awareness. Writing helps us to make sense of our thoughts and emotions by articulating our inner truths into stories, both for our own processing and for the potential to resonate with others. My vision for write & restore is to integrate the stress-reducing and awareness-building qualities of storytelling with methods from mindfulness and yoga to build a community for storytellers that is rooted in wellness.
write & restore launched January 2022 under the name Historiae, as a reimagined virtual wellness space set on cultivating community well-being through storytelling. The name, historiae comes from the Latin word for stories. In Spanish, the word, historía is used for both 'story' and 'history' in English. Tasha loves how the Spanish word encapsulates both of these ideas into one single word. That our histories and our stories are intrinsically intertwined. Our stories are our histories and vice versa.
In April 2023, Tasha relaunched Historiae under the new name: Rut | Write & Restore, wanting to really focus on the intention of cultivating restorative practices rooted in narrative medicine and yoga philosophy. The name "Rut" holds many meanings to Tasha. In 2021, Tasha chose Ruth as her Hebrew name after her Nana. In Hebrew, רות, Ruth/Rut is interpreted as a name of compassion from the biblical story of the Book of Ruth. The English word, root, is also an exquisite metaphor for the way yoga, literature, and creative writing grounds us by connecting us to the elements surrounding us, that nourish us, and are a fundamental base that is necessary for our growth. Roots bring us our sense of community and can intertwine us deeply while also allowing for the flexibility to replant, regrow, and replenish.
Now, we are operating under "write + restore" which hits at the root of what we are doing. Maybe you'll find how we got here interesting :)
Throughout Tasha's studies, she felt very rooted in learning language and literature. However, outside of academia, often found it difficult to keep a consistent literary practice, missing the structure and commitment of academic courses. After graduating college, Tasha turned to yoga as a means to keep a consistent daily practice and to stay rooted in community.
When the world began to go into lockdown at the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Tasha began reconnecting with her love of literature. She signed up for a virtual creative writing course and remembered the magic of storytelling. Later that year, Tasha completed a yoga teacher training program and began brainstorming ways to make her dream practice into a reality, a wellness space integrating narrative-based healing with theories and methods from yoga and mindfulness.
Tasha pulls from her education and experience as a K-12 educator, Unified Yoga and Yin certifications, and MFA studies in Creative Nonfiction Writing and Narrative Medicine. Using a holistic approach, Tasha integrates the restorative qualities from literature and yoga through practices such as Writing Circles, Book Clubs, and Yoga Classes.
"My love of literature brought me to a career in education, the stress of being an educator brought me to yoga, the meditations from yoga brought me back to writing, my writing brought me back to my roots, to Ruth. Becoming Ruth brought me home, and Rut | Write & Restore is a culmination of my passions where I get to bring you all along on the journey."
